Family Goal Setting

Goal setting as a family is very essential and as much important as personal or individual goal setting.

It is highly beneficial for families to have corporate goals and objective.

However, prior to goal setting, it is imperative to have vision and mission statements. As these will inform the composition and direction of your family goals. proverbs 29:18;

I strongly believe that there is a purpose for every family unit on earth as there is a purpose for every single individual. Yes!!!

The following questions will assist families to clarify their mission/purpose on earth:

1. Why are we here as a family unit? - The why question;

2. What are we expected to achieve and accomplish? - The what/purpose question (Eccl. 3, Romans 8:28; Acts 26:16; Romans 9:11)

3. Where are we headed, direction? - The where question (Genesis 12:1);

4. How are we supposed to go about it? - The how question;

5. When is the time? - The when question.

It is very important to note that there is a general purpose of God for families as spelt out in creation and all over the scriptures but each family unit has specific purposes, which they need to diligently and purposefully search out. Eccl 7:25;
Proverbs 25:2; 1 Corinthians 2:10.

The above questions when answered form the vision and mission statements of every family.

Goals and objectives is the breakdown of the vision into actionable and realistic
bits, which make up the whole.

Yearly, monthly, weekly and daily goals should always be complimentary of the global vision. These are to daily, weekly, monthly and yearly draw the family closer to the overall achievement of their purposes.

Goal setting is important and for every family member to be aware, properly bought into the family vision and actively engaged/involved in the goal setting process and actualization.

Case Study -
1. How relevant are the aforementioned to the making or breaking of family?
Families in focus - The Adam's family (Genesis 2 & 3); The Abraham's family (Genesis 12,13;16,21); The Jesus' family;

2. How can we align our own families to fulfilling its purpose in lessons learnt from the mentioned families as it relates to goal setting?

3. Whose responsibility is it in the family to set goals?

4. Are toddlers too young to be taught and carried along in the visions of the family?

5. How important is it for every family member to be actively engaged in carrying out the daily goals of the family, which culminates and determines the overall fulfillment of the purpose of the family?

6. How does the global family purpose affect my own goals and purpose as an individual member of the family?

We encourage family units on the following exercise: Habakkuk 2:2
1. To seek to know and then write down their vision & mission statements;

2. Every family member should be able to quote them, having a keen awareness of what his/her family is about and where the family is headed;

3. The vision should be broken down into goals and objectives which guides each family member's decisions and activities in order to actualize their purposes.

  1. The issues i can get out of the case studies referring to the Adam Family are;
    1. Clarity on the instruction given, God said Don't eat , Eve added Don't touch
    2. Absolute loyalty on the part of Eve to family instructions
    3. Adam was not deceived but disobeyed for emotional sentiments
